Water Conversion
Source of Water
The City began converting the source of the water supply from groundwater to a combination of groundwater and surface water in June of 2018. The reason for the conversion is comply with Fort Bend Subsidence District Mandates which calls for a 30% reduction in groundwater usage, now. By the year 2027, the City must comply with a 60% reduction mandate.
The City has taken steps to minimize any noticeable changes in the water such as taste and odor by conducting tests from corrosion studies to taste tests. With the recent conversion to the chloramine disinfection process, the City is now prepared to launch the first stage of the conversion to surface water.
Disinfectant
The City of Rosenberg uses chloramine for water disinfection.
Dialysis Machines
While this is a positive change overall; persons dependent on dialysis machines will need to adjust the settings on their treatments to avoid a condition known as hemolytic anemia. This can occur if the disinfectant is not completely removed from the water that is used for the dialysate. Consequently, the pretreatment scheme used for the dialysis units must include some means, such as a charcoal filter, for removing the chloramine prior to this date. Medical facilities should also determine if additional precautions are required for other medical equipment.
Fish
In addition, chloraminated water may be toxic to fish. If you have a fish tank, please make sure that the chemicals or filters that you are using are designed for use in water that has been treated with chloramines. You may also need to change the type of filter that you use for fish tanks.
